1865 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-453a
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-453a is a compositional variant of J-453, struck in a different alloy from the standard copper version. This off-metal variant shares the identical die combination but was produced on a planchet of alternative metallic content, aluminum or nickel. The production of multiple compositions for the double eagle pattern dies indicates the design was being evaluated across the full range of available alloys, though the double eagle denomination would obviously continue to be struck in gold for production purposes.
