The 1865 Proof Double Eagle Pattern - J-453 is a proof double eagle struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Civil War Patterns (1860-1865) series. This copper double eagle carries the IN GOD WE TRUST reverse adopted in 1866, from a reverse die with the motto cut by hand; about 20 are known, several gilt. It is struck in copper with a reeded edge; USPatterns rates it R-6. Catalogued as Judd-453, Pollock-526, A/W 469, Taxay EP431. Cataloged as PCGS #60640.
