Description
A doubled die reverse is visible on this 1865 Indian Head cent (Fancy 5 variety). A doubled die occurs when a working die receives a second, misaligned impression from the hub during the die-making process, creating doubled design elements on all coins struck from that die. This is one of the best DDR examples on an indian head cent and doubling can be seen on the letters, wreath, and shield. This variety is cataloged as FS-1801 and Snow-2. The 1865 Fancy 5 variety features a tall, ornate "5" in the date with distinctive serifs, distinguishing it from the Plain 5 variety with its shorter, simpler digit.
