Description
A die clash is visible on both sides of this 1865 Indian Head cent (Fancy 5 variety). A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them. On the reverse, the Indian's chin and neck are clashed under the left side of the shield. On the obverse, the "C" from CENT and part of the wreath are clashed in front of the Indian. The 1865 Fancy 5 variety features a tall, ornate "5" in the date with distinctive serifs, distinguishing it from the Plain 5 variety with its shorter, simpler digit.
