Description

Judd-318, Pollock-370, is the final 1863 two-cent pattern variety, completing the remarkable fourteen-variety development series that began with the Washington portrait of J-305. This pattern represents the end of the 1863 phase of two-cent design development, though additional varieties would follow in 1864 (J-363 through J-374) as the Mint made final refinements before production began. The journey from J-305's presidential portrait to J-318's refined shield design encapsulates one of the most consequential design evolutions in American numismatic history, resulting in the first US coin to bear the motto IN GOD WE TRUST.
