Description
Judd-306, Pollock-358, marks the transition from the Washington portrait concept to the shield design that would ultimately be adopted for the two-cent piece. This pattern features an early version of the Union shield obverse with the motto GOD OUR TRUST, paired with a wreath reverse bearing the denomination. The shield motif symbolized the defense of the Union during the Civil War, making it a politically potent design choice that resonated with the patriotic sentiment of the era. This pattern represents one of the earliest shield design concepts, which would be refined through subsequent varieties until the final version was approved for production in 1864.
