1863 Proof Two Cent Pattern - J-307
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
Judd-307, Pollock-359, continues the refinement of the shield design for the proposed two-cent denomination. This variety features modifications to the shield arrangement, motto placement, or wreath design compared to J-306. The iterative process of producing multiple shield design variations allowed the Mint to fine-tune the details of what would become the first US coin to bear a religious motto. Each successive variety shows subtle adjustments in the proportions of the shield, the style of the lettering, and the arrangement of decorative elements around the central device.
