Description

This bronze variety of the Judd-305 Washington portrait two-cent pattern is struck in a different metallic composition than the standard J-305 issue. The bronze alloy gives the piece a warm brown tone that differs from the copper-nickel version, providing Mint officials with the opportunity to evaluate how the Washington portrait design would appear in the metal that was being considered for the new denomination. Like the standard J-305, this piece features George Washington on the obverse and the TWO CENTS denomination with GOD OUR COUNTRY motto on the reverse. The bronze composition would ultimately be chosen for the regular two-cent pieces that entered production in 1864.

Rarity Notes

Very rare. Bronze composition variety of the J-305 Washington portrait pattern. Population data is limited. Scarcer than the standard composition.
