Description
Judd-317, Pollock-369, is the penultimate 1863 two-cent pattern variety. This near-final design iteration shows the shield obverse and wreath reverse in a configuration very close to the adopted production version. The extensive pattern series from J-305 through J-318 represents one of the most thoroughly documented denomination development processes in US Mint history. By the time J-317 was struck, Mint Director James Pollock and Chief Engraver Longacre had evaluated portraits, shields, scrolls, wreaths, and multiple motto wordings across fourteen distinct varieties.
