Description

Judd-314, Pollock-366, is a proof two-cent pattern featuring one of the later refinements in the shield design series. By J-314, the design had evolved significantly from the Washington portrait concept of J-305, with the Union shield motif firmly established as the preferred obverse device. The motto, which began as GOD OUR COUNTRY on the earliest versions, had progressed toward the IN GOD WE TRUST wording that would appear on the production coins. This pattern showcases the near-final design language, with the shield's horizontal stripes and vertical bars representing the states of the Union bound together in national purpose.
