Description

Judd-311, Pollock-363, is a proof two-cent pattern presenting yet another refinement to the shield and motto design. This variety may be distinguished by changes to the size or style of the IN GOD WE TRUST (or GOD OUR TRUST) motto lettering, the number or arrangement of horizontal and vertical stripes on the shield, or the treatment of the arrows and olive branch that typically flank the shield device. The meticulous documentation of these design stages through individually cataloged pattern numbers reflects the 19th-century practice of treating each distinct die combination as a separate collectible variety.
