Description
Judd-322, Pollock-374, is the final 1863 three-cent pattern variety. This proof striking completes the four-variety series that evaluated design options for the three-cent denomination. The eventual outcome of this experimentation was the creation of the nickel three-cent piece in 1865, which used a completely different design from the silver three-cent piece. While these 1863 patterns may not directly resemble the adopted Shield-type nickel three-cent design by James B. Longacre, they represent part of the developmental thinking that led to that denomination's creation.
