Description
Judd-321, Pollock-373, continues the three-cent pattern series with another design variation. The 1863 three-cent patterns (J-319 through J-322) represent a modest but important group exploring the future of this denomination during the Civil War. While the silver three-cent piece would continue in production until 1873, the nickel three-cent piece authorized in 1865 would provide a base-metal alternative that survived until 1889. These 1863 patterns may foreshadow the nickel version, testing designs that could work in either silver or base metal compositions.
