Description
Judd-320, Pollock-372, is a proof three-cent pattern presenting an alternative design concept from J-319. This variety explores a different approach to the three-cent denomination, testing modified devices, an altered arrangement of the numeral III, or a change in the reverse wreath composition. The three-cent denomination occupied an unusual niche in American coinage, being too small for convenient handling yet filling an important role in making change for postage stamps, which cost three cents each. The wartime pattern program included three-cent varieties to evaluate whether the denomination should continue, and if so, in what form.
