Description

Judd-319, Pollock-371, in its original striking is a proof three-cent pattern featuring an experimental design for the three-cent denomination. The silver three-cent piece had been in production since 1851, and this pattern tested a potential redesign during the Civil War. Original strikings are distinguished from later restrikes by their die state and surface characteristics, with originals showing earlier, sharper die states. The three-cent denomination was particularly affected by the wartime hoarding crisis, as its small silver content made it easy to melt, and this pattern was part of the evaluation process for transitioning to a base-metal three-cent coin.

Rarity Notes

Rarity-7. Original strikings are notably scarcer than restrikes. Approximately 5-8 original specimens known.
