A substantial pre-cud die crack traverses the reverse of this 1863 Indian Head cent from approximately 8 o'clock to 10 o'clock through the wreath. A pre-cud is a significant die crack that has not yet broken away to form a full cud, which would appear as a featureless raised blob of metal at the rim. In this intermediate stage, the crack is prominent but the die metal remains intact. A die chip connecting the upper crack to the fourth leaf from the top indicates progressive deterioration that would likely have produced a full cud had the die continued in service. The 1863 Indian Head cent was the final copper-nickel issue before the mid-1864 bronze transition.
