1863 Indian Head Cent Pre-Cud Reverse (9 to 10:30)

Description

A pre-cud die crack running from the 9 o'clock to the 10:30 o'clock position through the reverse wreath documents an early stage of rim-segment die failure on this 1863-P Indian Head Cent — the last year of the copper-nickel alloy before the mid-1864 transition to bronze composition. Pre-cud cracks can be the predecessors of retained cuds: if the isolated rim segment breaks free, it may sink below the die face, and if it is eventually lost, it leaves the void that defines a cud variety. At the pre-cud stage, the crack is complete from rim to rim but the segment is still part of the die and has not moved. The wreath location — spanning the 9-to-10:30 arc on the reverse — places the crack within the oak wreath that encircles the shield on the Indian Head Cent reverse. The 1863 Indian Head Cent was struck in copper-nickel — 88% copper, 12% nickel — at the Philadelphia Mint under James B. Longacre's design during the height of the Civil War, when cent hoarding drove demand for privately issued tokens to fill the gap left by coin shortages. Civil War-era hoarding meant dies were run far beyond normal use, producing an unusually high number of die breaks and deterioration errors.
