Description

ADC-5c-1853-01 is an atypical die clash on an 1853 Seated Liberty half dime with arrows at the date, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes. Only the reverse die shows the clash; MDC thinks the obverse die was probably judged too damaged by the clash and removed from service. Compared with how the dies sat when they struck the coin, the clash is turned by the familiar 5° from the horizontal plane. The coin has post-strike damage on the reverse, with heavy scratches below DIME. MDC shows the relationship of the dies at the clash. Liberty's arm and dress left a mark running from the F in OF down into the lower part of the laurel wreath, and the lower hem of her dress and the date left marks below ATES OF. Jim Kuhl of Florida supplied the coin.
