1853 Atypical Die Clash ADC-5C-1853-01

Description

ADC-5c-1853-01 This die clash is found on just the reverse die of the 1853-P Seated Liberty Half Dime. More than likely, the obverse die was deemed to be to damaged from the clashing of dies and pulled from service. The clash has the familiar 5° offset from the horizontal plane when compared to the actual positioning of the dies when they struck the coin. There is some after strike damage to the coin on the reverse die, with heavy scratches seen below the word DIME. The last photo shows the relationship of the dies when they clashed. The first picture shows the clash mark left by Liberty’s arm and her dress, starting from the F in OF and ending in the lower part of the laurel wreath. The next picture shows the clash mark left by the lower hem line of Liberty’s dress and the clash marks left by the date which is seen underneath the ATES OF.
