Description

This is a restrike of the Judd-112a three-cent pattern in coin silver, produced sometime after the original striking, during the late 1850s or 1860s when Mint Director James Ross Snowden authorized widespread production of pattern restrikes to satisfy collector demand and facilitate the Mint Cabinet's acquisition of rare coins through trade. The restrike shares the same die combination as the original J-112a: a Seated Liberty half dime obverse paired with the plain numeral "3" reverse. Restrikes can typically be distinguished from originals by differences in die state, surface quality, and striking characteristics. The practice of restriking patterns was controversial even in the 19th century, as it blurred the line between official Mint products and pieces produced primarily for the numismatic market. Nevertheless, these restrikes provide collectors an opportunity to acquire examples of otherwise virtually unobtainable pattern types from the pivotal year when the three-cent denomination was first being contemplated.

Rarity Notes

R.6 to R.7. Scarce but slightly more available than originals due to restrike production.
