Description
Judd-114a is the coin silver version of yet another die variety in the 1849 three-cent pattern series, distinguished from J-111a and J-112a by its specific die pairing. The obverse again borrows from the Seated Liberty half dime series, while the reverse carries the plain numeral "3" designating the proposed three-cent denomination. The J-114 series represents the fourth distinct die combination used for 1849 trime patterns (following J-111 through J-113), demonstrating that the Mint produced multiple sets of dies as the denomination was debated in Congress. The "a" suffix indicates the coin silver composition (90% silver, 10% copper), as opposed to the base billon alloy of J-114. These patterns were all produced in extremely limited quantities, reflecting their experimental nature rather than any intent for circulation. The three-cent piece would eventually enter production in 1851 with Longacre's distinctive star-and-shield design, bearing no resemblance to these borrowed-die prototypes.
