Description

Judd-113, Pollock-127, High R.7. This restrike of the "Ugly Duckling" three-cent pattern reproduces the starkly minimalist design of the original: an Arabic 3 on one face and a Roman III on the other, completely devoid of legends, dates, or identifying marks. Struck in silver alloy with a plain edge. Distinguishing originals from restrikes among Judd-113 specimens presents a particular challenge, as the design itself carries no date or identifying marks that might reveal production timing. The Judd reference notes that restrikes were produced in standard 90% coin silver, while originals was struck in a lower-fineness alloy. The recorded weight of approximately 19.2 grains on examined specimens corresponds precisely to a standard half dime planchet. Whether original or restrike, surviving examples of this variety number fewer than a dozen, and the piece remains one of the most unusual and stripped-down designs ever produced at an American mint.
