Description
Judd-68 is the 1836 gold dollar pattern struck in gold alloyed with silver. It uses the same dies as Judd-67: a Liberty cap within rays on the obverse and 1 D. inside a palm frond on the reverse. uspatterns.com, citing David Akers, says these were struck in medal alignment in January 1844, when Mint Director Robert M. Patterson had more of the gold dollar patterns made for a House committee, and lists six confirmed examples, one in the Smithsonian. Reference data: struck in gold alloyed with silver with a plain edge, rated R-7. Catalogued as Judd-68, Pollock-71, A/W 51, Taxay EP86.
