Description

Designated Judd-61 (Pollock-66), this silver restrike of the 1836 Gobrecht dollar uses the "Name On Base" obverse die — the original configuration where C. GOBRECHT F. (Fecit, Latin for "made it") appears directly on the rock base beneath the Seated Liberty figure. The reverse displays the famous Flying Eagle soaring through a starry field of 26 stars. Struck in silver with a plain edge. The original Name On Base dollars (Judd-60) were first struck in the last week of December 1836, with approximately 1,000 produced in coin-turn die alignment (Die Alignment I). An additional 600 were struck in early 1837 using medal-turn alignment (Die Alignment II). This Judd-61 restrike, produced decades later for the collector market, can be distinguished from originals by its die alignment and the progression of a diagnostic reverse die crack that developed over time. The 1887 Mint Report confirms that the majority of Gobrecht dollar cabinet coins were produced in two periods: 1859-1860 and 1869-1874.
