Description

Cataloged as Judd-62, this copper restrike of the 1836 Gobrecht dollar features the "Name On Base" obverse — the original die configuration with C. GOBRECHT F. engraved directly on the rock base — paired with the starry reverse showing the Flying Eagle amid 26 stars. Struck in copper with a plain edge, this piece belongs to the series of cabinet coin restrikes produced at the Philadelphia Mint for sale to collectors. As a copper striking from the Name On Base dies, Judd-62 represents the off-metal companion to the silver originals (Judd-60) and silver restrikes (Judd-61). The copper composition allowed collectors of modest means to acquire an example of Gobrecht's celebrated design, and these pieces were eagerly purchased when offered through the Mint's informal sales to favored collectors and dealers during the 1860s and 1870s.
