Description
Designated Judd-63, this silver restrike of the 1836 Gobrecht dollar combines the "Name Below Base" obverse with the starless reverse — an eagle soaring through a plain field without the 26 stars that appear on the original 1836 reverse. Struck in silver with a plain edge, this variety belongs to the cabinet coin restrikes produced at the Philadelphia Mint between approximately 1859 and 1874. The starless reverse was introduced for the 1838 and 1839 Gobrecht dollars, where the stars were relocated to the obverse field surrounding the Seated Liberty. Pairing this later reverse with the 1836-dated obverse creates a die combination that never existed in original production — a hallmark of the restrike era, when Mint employees combined available dies without strict regard for historical accuracy. The "Name Below Base" obverse, with Gobrecht's name repositioned to a less conspicuous location below the rock, represents the modified die created in response to criticism of the engraver's prominent signature.
