Description

Occurring on an 1831 Matron Head Coronet Head Cent, this cud formed when a piece of the die broke away at the rim, leaving a raised, featureless blob of metal on the struck coin where the missing die fragment once imparted design detail. Cuds on Coins gives no cross-reference for this entry, which documents die failure on early American copper coinage struck during the Matron Head era of 1816 to 1835. Large Cents of this period were struck on relatively thick copper planchets at the Philadelphia Mint, and the mechanical stresses of striking these heavy coins contributed to die failures including rim cuds. The 1831 cents come with two lettering styles, Large Letters and Medium Letters.
