Description

Occurring on the 1831 Matron Head Coronet Head Cent with Large Letters, this cud formed when a piece of the die broke away at the rim, leaving a raised, featureless blob of metal on the struck coin where the missing die fragment once imparted design detail. Cuds represent one of the most dramatic categories of die breaks, as the complete loss of a die section produces a visually obvious raised area that stands in stark contrast to the surrounding design. Cross-referenced as LCC-1831-1b, this variety is attributed by Cuds on Coins and documents die failure on early American copper coinage struck during the Matron Head era of 1816 to 1835. Large Cents of this period were struck on relatively thick copper planchets at the Philadelphia Mint, and the mechanical stresses of striking these heavy coins contributed to die failures including rim cuds. The 1831 Large Letters variety represents one of the two lettering styles produced that year, and cud errors on pre-Civil War copper denominations carry particular appeal for collectors who specialize in early American die varieties.
