Description
Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1831 Matron Head Coronet Head Cent - Large Letters is part of the Matron Head Coronet Head Cents 1816-1835 series. With a mintage of 3.4 million, this is a less common issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a hair ribbon inscribed LIBERTY, with a coronet of stars around her head and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT. Minted during the age of Jacksonian democracy and the rise of the common man, as new branch mints opened in Charlotte, Dahlonega, and New Orleans. Philadelphia's mint — the nation's first — has produced coins without interruption since its founding in 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $38 to $2.0K depending on grade and condition.
