About This Coin
The 1831 Matron Head Coronet Head Cent Base is a United States cent from the Matron Head Coronet Head Cents 1816-1835 series. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a hair ribbon inscribed LIBERTY, with a coronet of stars around her head, while the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT. Designed by Robert Scot. Struck in copper, weighing 10.89 grams, 28 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Produced at the Philadelphia Mint. The Matron Head (or Coronet) large cent represented the next evolution in cent design, produced during the "Era of Good Feelings" through the presidency of Andrew Jackson. The large cent was a workhorse of everyday American commerce. Common by large cent standards but still collected avidly. Many die varieties exist, cataloged in the Newcomb reference system.
