About This Coin

The 1817 Matron Head Coronet Head Cent Base is a United States cent from the Matron Head Coronet Head Cents 1816-1835 series — the second year of the series. The Philadelphia Mint struck 3,948,400 large cents dated 1817; no mintage was recorded for the proofs. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, with stars around the border, and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT. The 15-Star and 13-Star obverse varieties exist. The 15 Stars obverse (N-16) is an engraving error: the stars were spaced too closely, and two more were added to fill the gap. Struck in copper, weighing 10.89 grams, 28 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Designed by Robert Scot.
