Description

The 1817 Matron Head Coronet Head Cent - 15 Stars is a cent produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the Matron Head Coronet Head Cents 1816-1835 series. With a mintage of 3.9 million, this is a less common issue — the lower-mintage of the two mint variants. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a hair ribbon inscribed LIBERTY, with a coronet of stars around her head and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT. The 15-Star and 13-Star obverse varieties exist. The 15-Star is a notable error reflecting miscounted stars. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Estimated market value ranges from $61 to $7.8K depending on grade and condition. Struck in copper, weighing 10.89 grams, 28 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #1597.
