Description

Produced at the Philadelphia Mint, the 1817 Matron Head Coronet Head Cent - 13 Stars is part of the Matron Head Coronet Head Cents 1816-1835 series. The 3.9 million figure is for every 1817 cent, 13 Stars and 15 Stars together; how it divides between them is not recorded. The obverse features Liberty facing left wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, with stars around the border, and the reverse displays a wreath enclosing ONE CENT. The 15-Star and 13-Star obverse varieties exist. The 15 Stars obverse (N-16) is an engraving error: the stars were spaced too closely, and two more were added to fill the gap. Struck in copper, weighing 10.89 grams, 28 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #1594.
