Description

A die clash is visible on the reverse of this 1798 Draped Bust large cent (Second Hair Style, Sheldon S-184). A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring elements of each die's design onto the opposing die. On the reverse, the face of Liberty from the obverse is clashed around the wreath. The 1798 large cent was produced in large quantities with numerous die varieties, and the Second Hair Style features a modified portrait with the hair arranged differently than the earlier First Hair Style.
