1798 Draped Bust Large Cent S-166 Reverse Cud with Obverse Die Cracks
Error
Description
This 1798 Draped Bust large cent (Sheldon S-166, Second Hair Style) exhibits multiple die errors: a cud die break on the reverse and unusual die cracks on the obverse. The cud on the reverse if just above the first "T" in "STATES" with a connected die crack running down through the "O." The unusual die crack on the obverse forms a near 90 degree angle with one crack running from the "B" in "LIBERTY" down into Liberty's hair and straight out from there, through her eye to the north east rim. The combination of deterioration on both dies suggests this die pair was nearing the end of its usable life when this coin was struck.
