1796 Draped Bust Large Cent (Reverse of 1795) Obverse Die Clash with Reverse Retained Cud

Description

A die clash is visible on the obverse and a retained cud is visible on the reverse of this 1796 Draped Bust large cent of the Reverse of 1795 variety. A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring elements of each die's design onto the opposing die. On the obverse, the wreaths from the reverse are clashed under Liberty's chin and behind the hair. The reverse also exhibits a retained cud where a piece of the die has broken away but remained in place just outside the "RIC" in "AMERICA". The 1796 Draped Bust cent is a transitional year that used both the old Reverse of 1795 and the newer Reverse of 1797 designs.
