1861 Indian Head Cent Die Clash (Reverse)

Description

The 1861 Indian Head Cent reverse die clash is a striking manufacturing anomaly from the first year of the Civil War. A die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike one another without a planchet between them, transferring incuse mirror images of each design element onto the opposing die face. On the reverse of this variety, Liberty's ear from the obverse is clashed near the N in ONE, and the forehead detail is visible running beneath the C in CENT — facial features of the obverse intruding upon the wreath and legend area of the reverse. James Barton Longacre designed the Indian Head Cent, introduced in 1859, with a female Liberty in a feathered Native American headdress. The 1861 Civil War context is directly relevant to die quality: public hoarding of cents created intense production pressure at the Mint, and dies were used beyond their normal service life — increasing the likelihood of die fatigue and clash events. Indian Head Cents from 1861 show a higher incidence of die deterioration errors than more routine years of the series.
