Description
Representing one of the earliest die clash errors in American numismatics, this 1793 Wreath Cent with vine and bars edge displays clashed reverse design elements transferred onto the obverse die. The wreath from the reverse is visible directly under Liberty's chin on the obverse, where the incuse impression of the branch and leaf pattern was imprinted when the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them. Die clashes occur during press operation when the feed mechanism fails to insert a blank between the dies, allowing them to make direct contact and transfer elements of each design onto the opposing die face. The vine and bars edge variety was used on a portion of the 1793 Wreath Cent production and is less common than the lettered edge variety, making this die clash doubly significant — it occurs on the scarcer edge type of an already historic coin. The 1793 Wreath Cent was the second major design type produced at the newly established Philadelphia Mint, succeeding the Chain Cent earlier that year. Designed by Henry Voigt (or possibly Joseph Wright), the Wreath Cent features a Liberty head with flowing hair on the obverse surrounded by a wreath of leaves on the reverse. Struck in pure copper, the large cent weighs approximately 13.48 grams with a diameter of about 26-28 mm, though specifications varied in this early period of U.S. Mint operations. The total 1793 Wreath Cent mintage across all edge varieties was approximately 63,353 pieces. Die clashes on 1793 coinage document the operational challenges of the fledgling Mint, where inexperienced press operators and primitive feeding mechanisms contributed to die-on-die contact events that would become important diagnostic features for modern variety attribution.
