Description
The 1792 Getz-LEA Half Dollar is filed under Getz Patterns in the Washington Pieces (1783-1800) series. Peter Getz, a self-taught engraver of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, cut dies in 1792 for half dollars with G. WASHINGTON PRESIDENT I. and a bust copied from the 1791 cents (Baker). Baker lists a reverse with a large eagle and thirteen arrows, its die cut through as if rejected (No. 23), and a small eagle with fifteen stars in silver (No. 24) and copper (No. 25). He adds that a copy of No. 24 was made about 1858 by Robert Lovett Jr. for William Idler and struck in several metals, with the word COPY sometimes removed; Musante numbers these copies GW-27. It is catalogued as Baker-25, Musante GW-22. PCGS lists it as #927.
