Description

Cataloged by MadDieClashes, TDC-25C-2020-01WF documents a typical die clash on the 2020 (P) Weir Farm National Historical Park Quarter from the America the Beautiful series. Die clashing occurs when obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, transferring incuse design elements from one die onto the opposing die face. Once clashed, every subsequent coin struck by that die pair carries faint ghost images of the opposite design — obverse features appear as shallow impressions in the reverse field, and vice versa. The Weir Farm quarter reverse, designed by Thomas Hipschen and sculpted by Renata Gordon, depicts artist J. Alden Weir seated at an easel painting en plein air at his Connecticut farm, a composition rich in fine sculptural detail that provides numerous transfer points during a clash event. Philadelphia produced these quarters as part of the 2020 ATB program, the penultimate year of the series that began in 2010 honoring sites of national significance across all fifty states and territories. The TDC prefix in the catalog number distinguishes typical die clashes — where the transferred impressions follow predictable patterns based on design alignment — from the rarer rotated or tilted clashes that produce diagnostics in unexpected locations. Collectors examining specimens should look for faint traces of the Weir Farm scenic design ghosted onto the obverse field around Washington's portrait, or conversely, elements of John Flanagan's Washington bust appearing as shallow impressions in the reverse landscape. Low-angle lighting at 5-10x magnification typically reveals clash marks most effectively, as the transferred images sit very shallow in the field and can be obscured by luster or toning. The catalog designation 01WF confirms this as the first documented typical die clash for the 2020 Weir Farm issue.
