1960-D Atypical Die Clash ADC-1c-1960D(SD)-35

Description

Cataloged as ADC-1c-1960D(SD)-35, this 1960-D Small Date Lincoln Memorial cent preserves two distinct atypical die clash events, both of which left clash marks from the roof of the Memorial building entering into the 1 digit of the date. The die is readily identified by a die chip in the 6 digit, a repunched mintmark, and a die chip in the U of UNITED. Event A produced clash marks from the bottom of the letter E in UNITED transferring down into bay 3 of the Memorial building on the reverse. Event B is documented at Stages B and C, with Stage C showing the more advanced impression. The close proximity of the clash marks from Events A and B raises the possibility that they resulted from die chatter rather than two separate clashing incidents, as rapid bouncing between the dies during a single malfunction could produce closely spaced marks. This tilted clash pattern, in which the dies met at an angle rather than squarely, created the distinctive roof-to-date transfer that distinguishes this variety from normal clash marks.
