Description

ADC-1c-1960D(SD)-28 is an atypical die clash on a 1960-D Small Date Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes through die stages B to F of die 28. Each MDC stage is labelled with a stage of the repunched mint mark WRPM-141: B with C, C with D, D with E, E with I, and F with J. MDC's clash-area notation (obverse / reverse) is given for each. Throughout the known life of the obverse die, two features stay constant: the repunched mint mark (WRPM-141, also 1960D-1MM-169) and a die crack across Lincoln's shoulder above VDB. Stage B, one clash event (notation 2 3 / 1 3): a tilted clash put the tops of TAT from STATES below Lincoln's bust, and the field and lower bust left a bar across the top of STATES. The D of UNITED clashed into the field by Lincoln's lower right shoulder, and the shoulder and field left a line inside the D. On the reverse, several die chips sit in and around ONE's O, and a die crack joins CE in CENT. Stage C, two more clash events (notation 3 4 6 / T1 2 3): letters of STATES again show below the bust, but the bar through STATES has moved down, and its upper bar has thickened, perhaps from another clash. A mark from stage B has strengthened. The line inside UNITED's D has faded and been replaced by marks above and below the letter. The field and the jacket lapel left a mark, and the right corner of the Memorial roof left another. A new die chip sits at the left corner of the stylobate, and the crack connected to it has grown. Stage D, no new clashes (notation 3 4 6 /): the reverse has been changed for a refurbished die, not a new one, with no clash marks. It lacks the stage C reverse markers, has a die scrape through the N of UNITED and another beside the middle arm of ONE's E, and the C-E crack in CENT is gone. On the obverse, the mark by the date from stage C and the roof mark are still present, and the E of LIBERTY now has a die chip. Stage E, two clash events soon after (notation 2 3 4 6 / 1 2 3): several letters of STATES again show under the bust, and the shoulder crack is unchanged. A second roof mark has been added above the one that first appeared in stage B. The bar through STATES sits slightly lower than before, and the lapel mark is further left than in stage B. The back of the jacket now leaves a mark across the E of UNITED rather than the D, and the E of UNITED left a mark in the field by the lower jacket. The reverse has a die chip in the upper O of ONE, and the obverse a new chip in LIBERTY's B. Stage F, no new clashes (notation 4 /): the reverse die has been replaced again, the third reverse used with this obverse. Nearly all the obverse clash marks have faded except those near and around the date. LIBERTY's B and E chips remain, and the shoulder crack has not grown.
