1960-D Atypical Die Clash ADC-1c-1960D(SD)-23
Error
Description
Exhibiting three distinct clash marks on this 1960 Denver Lincoln Memorial Cent Small Date, ADC-1c-1960D(SD)-23 documents multiple design transfers from planchet-less strike events. The Memorial roof line clashed through the date area, Lincoln's head transferred through the words ONE CENT on the reverse, and the lower bust clashed through the word STATES — each mark representing a ghost impression of opposing die elements deposited during forceful die-to-die contact. The mintmark itself carries an additional variety: a repunched mintmark with a split bottom serif, adding an RPM attribution alongside the die clash. Two diagonal die scratches above the letters RT of LIBERTY and a small die chip in the C of CENT provide supplementary markers. The Small Date subvariety of the 1960-D is distinguished from its Large Date counterpart by the relative size and positioning of the date numerals. The convergence of three separate clash impressions with an RPM creates a multi-feature die of exceptional complexity, where atypical clash marks spanning from date through bust interact with an independently occurring mintmark anomaly.
