Description

ADC-1c-1960D(SD)-09 is an atypical die clash on a 1960-D Small Date Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes across die stages C, D and E, with clash events A to D. MDC's clash-area notation (obverse / reverse) is given for each stage. Stage C, events A and B (notation 1 3 4 / 1D 3 5D): in event A the hammer die tilted toward the bottom of the anvil die, leaving faint marks from ONE CENT above Lincoln's head and reverse marks through ONE's E and CENT's C. In event B the hammer die tilted toward the top of the anvil die, leaving marks from STATES under the bust, a bar through STATES, and a mark through the D of UNITED. Lincoln's back left a mark from the base of the D in UNITED. A faint Memorial roof line appears near the bottom of the 1 in the date, and there is die damage that may be related to the feeder arm. This die also carries the repunched mint mark 1960D-1MM-113. Stage D, events C and D (notation 1 2 3D 4D / 1T 2 3D): the marks are not strong, but the top of the A in STATES fixes the die positions, and a thicker middle bar through STATES shows more than one clash there. The obverse has more clash marks than in stage C. Two clash events show through the E of UNITED, and the earlier mark at the D's base has faded. The reverse has several close sets of marks between the C and E of CENT, which may come from die chatter rather than three separate clashes. Two Memorial roof line marks are visible, the lower one stronger than in stage C. Stage E (notation 2 3 4 /): the obverse marks are weaker but still visible. The reverse die has been replaced; it has no clash marks and no die scratches, so it may have been a new die. The coin MDC shows is from Bob Piazza's collection.
