1960-D Atypical Die Clash ADC-1c-1960D(SD)-07
Error
Description
Seventh documented atypical die clash for the 1960-D Small Date Lincoln Memorial Cent, this variety preserves clash marks created when the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them at a tilted angle — producing transfer impressions in unexpected positions. The word STATES is the only reverse element involved in this clash, with the actual marks left by TATE of STATES clearly visible on the obverse. Overlay analysis reveals the relative position of the dies when the clash occurred, confirming the tilted alignment. A distinctive roof clash mark protrudes from the front of Lincoln's jacket, characteristic of Memorial Cent die clashes where the building's architectural elements transfer onto the portrait side. The 1960 Small Date versus Large Date distinction is itself a significant collecting focus for this year, and die clashes on the Small Date subvariety add another layer of interest. Cataloged in the MadDieClashes atypical die clash reference system, this copper-plated zinc cent documents one of many die clash events that occurred during the high-volume Denver Mint production runs of 1960.
