Description

ADC-1c-1960D(SD)-04 is an atypical die clash on a 1960-D Small Date Lincoln Memorial cent, cataloged by Mad Die Clashes through four die stages, A to D, which together involve at least five clash events and many changes in the die markers. MDC's clash-area notation (obverse / reverse) is given for each stage. Stage A (notation / 1 3 4 5): the obverse die has no clash marks. It shows some abrasion of the kind usually tied to clash removal, but MDC judges it too light to explain removed clashes and suggests this obverse may not have been paired with the reverse when the first clashes happened. The reverse records three events: the bust's bottom edge clashed into STATES and into ED in UNITED; the lower back of the bust clashed into UNITED's E; and the mint mark clashed into the foot of the M in AMERICA. A last event put the top line of Lincoln's head across NE in ONE and CE in CENT. The order of the events cannot be worked out. Markers: a die chip in the E of ONE, and a die crack that starts at the C of CENT, passes through the E and ends in the N. Stage B (notation / 1 3 4 5) matches stage A except for a new die scratch from the top of LIBERTY's E, a die break in the lower R of LIBERTY, and a new chip in the upper O of ONE. The scratch running from the 6's left side down to the mint mark is still present. Stage C (notation 2 3 5 / 1 3 4 5) is the first with obverse clash marks: the bottoms of AME in AMERICA left a line through the mint mark, and the E of UNITED left a mark. The reverse mark from the mint mark remains. The R chip is still there, while the scratch over LIBERTY's E has faded. The clash line through STATES is now thicker, a sign of more than one clash in that spot. The chip on the E of ONE has grown a crack, the crack in CEN of CENT persists, and the S of PLURIBUS has a new chip. Stage D (notation 2 3 5 /): the obverse clash marks remain, but the reverse die has been replaced by one with no clash marks. The obverse die used before stage A has not been found. One die marker appears in all four stages and ties them together; MDC pictures it in each.
