Description

ADC-10c-2003D-01 is a 2003-D Roosevelt dime that combines two errors: a collapsed reverse die and a die clash. Mike Diamond examined the coin in his Coin World column in August 2011. It turned up in circulation, and many on an online error forum first took it for damage done outside the Mint; Diamond identified it instead as a sunken-die (die subsidence) error. The middle of the reverse die had sunk, so metal could not fill the design there and the planchet bulged into the hollow. Both faces are blank in the center, still showing the tumbling marks the planchet picked up before striking, and the obverse is dished. The coin weighs 2.24 grams, inside the normal range, but measures only 17.76 mm across, close to the width of a blank planchet, against 17.91 mm for a normal dime. Two radial cracks run through the struck outer ring of the reverse. Clash marks show on both sides; Diamond could not say whether they had anything to do with the collapse. The reeding is weak all around and missing between about 4:30 and 9:00, which, with the small diameter, led him to conclude that the coin was struck with somewhat less force than normal.
