Description

The 2024 (S) Proof Zitkala-Ša Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the American Women Quarters (2022 - 2025) series. The San Francisco Mint struck 407,625 clad proof Zitkala-Ša quarters dated 2024. The obverse features George Washington facing right in a new dynamic portrait by Laura Gardin Fraser (modeled in 1931 and first used on a quarter in 2022) and the reverse displays unique designs honoring prominent American women who shaped the nation's history. The reverse shows Zitkala-Ša holding a book and wearing traditional Yankton Sioux dress. Behind her are a stylized sun, for her work on The Sun Dance Opera, and a cardinal, for her name, which means “Red Bird”; a diamond pattern drawn from Yankton Sioux designs sits below the sun. Inscriptions: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, AUTHOR, ACTIVIST, COMPOSER, 25 CENTS and ZITKALA-ŠA. Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray, Patsy Takemoto Mink, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, Celia Cruz, and Zitkala-Sa. Murray was a civil rights activist and co-founder of NOW. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $28 depending on grade and condition. Struck in copper-nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #939146.
