Description

A quarter from the San Francisco Mint, the 2024 (S) Zitkala-Ša Quarter belongs to the American Women Quarters (2022 - 2025) series. The San Francisco Mint struck 435,280 uncirculated Zitkala-Ša quarters dated 2024. The obverse features George Washington facing right in a new dynamic portrait by Laura Gardin Fraser (modeled in 1931 and first used on a quarter in 2022) and the reverse displays unique designs honoring prominent American women who shaped the nation's history. The reverse shows Zitkala-Ša holding a book and wearing traditional Yankton Sioux dress. Behind her are a stylized sun, for her work on The Sun Dance Opera, and a cardinal, for her name, which means “Red Bird”; a diamond pattern drawn from Yankton Sioux designs sits below the sun. Inscriptions: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, AUTHOR, ACTIVIST, COMPOSER, 25 CENTS and ZITKALA-ŠA. Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray, Patsy Takemoto Mink, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, Celia Cruz, and Zitkala-Sa. Murray was a civil rights activist and co-founder of NOW. The San Francisco Mint, a Gold Rush-era institution, now specializes in proof and collector coinage. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $4 depending on grade and condition. Struck in copper-nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #940045.
