Description
The 2024 (S) Dr. Mary Edwards Walker Quarter is a quarter produced at the San Francisco Mint as part of the American Women Quarters (2022 - 2025) series. The U.S. Mint produced 452,840 examples, making this ranked 2nd of 15 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing right in a new dynamic portrait by Laura Gardin Fraser (her original 1931 design, finally adopted 90 years later) and the reverse displays unique designs honoring prominent American women who shaped the nation's history. Civil War surgeon and the only woman ever to receive the Medal of Honor, awarded in 1865 for her battlefield service. Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray, Patsy Takemoto Mink, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, Celia Cruz, and Zitkala-Sa. Murray was a civil rights activist and co-founder of NOW. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins.
