Description

The 2023 (S) Reverse Proof American Innovation Dollar - Mississippi is a proof dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the American Innovation Dollars 2018 to Date series. The U.S. Mint produced 61,847 examples, making this the lowest mintage among 24 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features the Statue of Liberty with a geared background representing innovation and the reverse displays rotating designs honoring innovations and innovators from each state and territory. This coin honors the first human lung transplant performed by Dr. James D. Hardy and his team at the University of Mississippi Medical Center on June 11, 1963. Ohio (the James Webb Space Telescope), Indiana (auto racing — Indianapolis Motor Speedway), Mississippi (the first human lung transplant — Dr. James Hardy), and Illinois (the steel plow — John Deere). As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors.
